Is a private boat worth it for Amsterdam Light Festival?

Is a Private Boat Worth It for Amsterdam Light Festival?

If you are planning to visit the Amsterdam Light Festival, you will quickly discover that there are two main ways to see the artworks from the water: join a public canal cruise or hire a private boat.

A public cruise is usually the more affordable option, especially for one or two people. But if you value privacy, comfort and a more personal experience, a private boat can be well worth the additional cost.

So, is a private boat worth it for Amsterdam Light Festival?

For couples celebrating a special occasion, families, groups of friends and business groups, the answer often depends on what you want from the evening. Here are the main differences to consider.

1. You have the entire boat to yourself

The biggest difference is simple: on a private cruise, you do not share the boat with strangers.

Public Amsterdam Light Festival cruises can carry many passengers and usually operate according to a fixed sightseeing format. On a private boat, it is just your own group and your captain.

This creates a completely different atmosphere. You can talk comfortably, move around more freely, enjoy a drink together and experience the artworks without being surrounded by other groups.

For a romantic evening, family gathering or celebration with friends, this privacy can be one of the main reasons to choose a private boat.

2. A smaller boat creates a more intimate experience

Amsterdam is a city that is best appreciated from close to the water.

Smaller private boats feel very different from large sightseeing vessels. Instead of feeling like part of a tour group, the evening becomes your own experience on the canals.

This can be particularly appealing during Amsterdam Light Festival, when illuminated artworks, historic canal houses, bridges and reflections on the water create a completely different atmosphere after dark.

3. You have more personal contact with your captain

On a private cruise, your captain is there for your group rather than addressing an entire boat full of passengers.

That means there is more opportunity to ask questions about Amsterdam, its canals, the Light Festival and the artworks you encounter along the way.

If you prefer to simply relax, talk with your friends and watch Amsterdam pass by, that is fine too. A private cruise does not need to feel like a formal guided tour.

4. Comfort matters during Amsterdam’s winter

Amsterdam Light Festival takes place during winter, so the type of boat you choose is important.

November, December and January evenings in Amsterdam can be cold and wet. When comparing cruises, check whether the boat is covered and heated, rather than looking only at the price.

Both Delphine and Leaudine are heated, allowing you to experience the festival comfortably even on a cold winter evening.

Leaudine also has a toilet on board, which can be an important consideration on a longer evening cruise. Delphine does not have a toilet.

5. A private boat becomes more attractive when travelling as a group

If you are travelling alone or as a couple and price is your main consideration, a public cruise will generally make more financial sense.

For a group, however, it is worth comparing the total price of individual tickets with the cost of hiring an entire private boat.

Private Boat Tour Amsterdam offers boats for groups of up to 10 guests aboard Delphine and 12 guests aboard Leaudine.

When the cost of a private boat is divided among several guests, the difference per person can become considerably smaller — while you still have the boat entirely to yourselves.

6. You can turn the Light Festival into a private dinner

One of the biggest advantages of a private boat is that the cruise can become the evening itself, rather than simply one activity during the evening.

On Leaudine, it is possible to combine Amsterdam Light Festival with a private dinner cruise.

Instead of having dinner in a restaurant and then joining a separate sightseeing cruise, you dine while Amsterdam and the illuminated artworks pass by outside.

This works particularly well for couples, families, groups of friends, business dinners, Christmas outings and end-of-year celebrations.

Drinks and wine are also available on board.

7. A private boat is particularly suited to special occasions

For an ordinary sightseeing trip, you may not need a private boat.

But Amsterdam Light Festival is often part of a special evening. If you are celebrating an anniversary, birthday, romantic weekend, family reunion or company event, having your own boat can make the experience much more personal.

There are no strangers sitting beside you, and your group can enjoy the evening at its own pace and in its own atmosphere.

Private vs public Amsterdam Light Festival cruise

The better choice depends on your priorities.

A public cruise is usually the better fit if you are travelling alone or as a couple, want to keep costs as low as possible, and mainly want a straightforward way to see the festival.

A private cruise makes more sense if privacy and atmosphere are important, you are travelling with a group, you are celebrating something special, or you want to combine the festival with drinks or dinner.

Neither option is automatically better. They simply offer very different experiences.

Delphine or Leaudine for Amsterdam Light Festival?

At Private Boat Tour Amsterdam, there are two different private Light Festival experiences.

Delphine – Private Light Festival Cruise

Delphine is a historic boat dating from 1915 and accommodates up to 10 guests.

She is small, intimate, covered and heated, making her particularly suitable for couples, families and groups of friends who primarily want to enjoy the Amsterdam Light Festival.

During the festival, Delphine is available for a private Light Festival cruise without dinner. Drinks can be enjoyed on board.

Please note that Delphine does not have a toilet.

Leaudine – Private Light Festival Dinner Cruise

Leaudine is a classic boat dating from the 1930s and accommodates up to 12 guests.

She is covered and heated and has a toilet on board.

During Amsterdam Light Festival, Leaudine offers the possibility of combining the festival route with a private dinner on board.

This makes her particularly suitable if you want the cruise to form the centrepiece of your evening rather than simply being a sightseeing activity.

Can you take a private cruise without following the Light Festival route?

Yes.

During the Amsterdam Light Festival period, you can also choose a regular private Amsterdam canal cruise instead of following the designated festival route.

This can be an interesting option for first-time visitors whose priority is seeing more of historic Amsterdam.

The Light Festival follows its own route in order to pass the artworks. A regular city cruise gives the captain more freedom to explore Amsterdam’s famous canals and landmarks.

So, is a private Amsterdam Light Festival cruise worth the money?

It depends on what matters most to you.

If your main goal is simply to see the artworks for the lowest possible price, a shared cruise is likely to suit you perfectly well.

If you want privacy, a heated historic boat, personal contact with your captain and an evening shared exclusively with your own group, a private cruise offers something fundamentally different.

And for larger groups, it is always worth comparing the price per person rather than simply comparing the headline price of a private boat with the price of one public-cruise ticket.

For a special occasion or private dinner, the additional privacy can become an important part of the experience itself.

Book a Private Amsterdam Light Festival Cruise

Private Boat Tour Amsterdam offers two ways to experience the festival privately:

Delphine: private Amsterdam Light Festival cruise for up to 10 guests.

Leaudine: private Amsterdam Light Festival dinner cruise for up to 12 guests, with a toilet on board.

Both boats are heated and reserved exclusively for your group.

Whether a private boat is worth it ultimately comes down to the kind of evening you want. If sharing the experience only with the people you came to Amsterdam with is important to you, a private boat may be exactly what makes the Light Festival memorable.
